Nara

Today, we got up bright and early and took the train to Nara. At the station, Zach and I both grabbed a McHotdog. It was mediocre, definitely not what I have come to expect from McDonald's. It is only served until 10am, becuase a McHotdog is obviously a breakfast delight. Anyway, back to Nara. If you've ever seen a travel brochure or poster for Nara you know it means deer. Oh yeah, deer in the middle of the city. Sure they're small and kind of mangey, but they're deer in a city. They love people. They have been domesticated by hundreds of years of Nara life with people who are there to visit the Buddhist temples. We saw some deer, some cherry blossoms, and some temples. First, we walked from the train station to a temple containing one of the largest pagodas in Japan. It was pretty tall. Then we boarded a bus and rode that for about an hour. That's no joke people. The bus ride cost over seven dollars and by the end of it we were all pretty hot and tired. Then we went to Horyuji. This temple houses one of the oldest surviving wooden structures in the world. That's pretty badass. They are from around 6-700. It contains many symbols of the buddha as well as some statues of the man who was responsible for having it built. Although it was destroyed once, the rebuilding is supposed to be fairly accurate with what was lost. After that, we revisited Kofukuji. There was more deer mingling there. Then we went to Todaiji. Todaiji was enormous. It is unbelievable that a structure that large was built from wood with no modern equipment at all. The buddha inside is over 50 feet tall. It doesn't even come close to filling the space, and that is beneath the drop ceiling. It is said to be the largest wooden building in the world and I would believe it. The temple complexes were all well manicured and very beautiful. Unfortunately, the weather was kind of bleak and the sky was a bit gray for most of the day. When the sun did come out, the cherry blossoms were very nice. I took some cool pictures. Hopefully they look good on a screen bigger than about 9 inches. I found a shirt that says poo-man puman in stead of puma with a pooping man. I saw an ad for lost on the train on the way back. I guess even the Japanese think it's a cool show even though there are no polar bears on this island either.

  2. I hope the Mchotdog has taught you a healthy hatred of McDonalds that many people already have.
